Irish Anti-War Protester Attacks US Navy Plane With
Axe, Does $500,000 Damage
A PROTESTER charged with criminal damage of a US navy aircraft at Shannon
Airport was last night in jail after failing to meet bail conditions
ordering her to leave Co Clare.
An estimated €500,000 in damage was caused to the aircraft in
yesterday morning's attack.
Killaloe District Court heard that peace campaigner Mary Kelly (50) was
arrested with a hatchet in her hand.
Ms Kelly, one of the founders of the Peace Camp at Shannon, was charged
with causing criminal damage without lawful excuse.
Inspector Tom Kennedy told the court the damage to the plane was put at
a minimum of €500,000 and it would be grounded for a number of days.
Seeking that Ms Kelly be remanded in custody, Insp Kennedy said he
believed Ms Kelly would carry out further acts of damage and could abscond
as she had no permanent address. In order to meet bail, Ms Kelly was
ordered to provide €5,000 of her own surety, surrender her passport and
leave Co Clare by 6pm last night. She failed to meet the conditions and
was remanded in custody to reappear in court on Wednesday.
