My brothers in arms and fellow Marines

Robert S. Finnegan

May god be with you as you embark on this mission, regardless of the circumstances.  In the end, it is we, who bear the brunt.  Our government has shown its disdain for our veterans, sidelining and warehousing us in old, decrepit VA hospitals and mental institutions where we live out our days, sometimes lying in our own filth.

Our government denies our requests for minimal benefits due us BY LAW even as they pour military aid into Israel.  Our own country treats us thus - we who have borne and bear arms in the service of our nation.  We will one day be called upon to justify our actions and conduct on the battlefield by the highest authority.  I am confident that you will conduct yourselves with honor, as we have throughout the history of the United States.  It is often forgotten that the Corps is older than our country.  Obey the laws set forth in the UCMJ and the Geneva convention, regardless of orders.

Follow your leadership principles and your consciences.  In this way we will avoid the stain that will surely be relegated to the other services taking part in this battle.  If there is any hope left for the restoration of democracy in the United States, it rests solely with the United States Marine Corps.  We alone out of the other armed services possess the capability and credibility to thwart a coup by the existing administration.

It is my fervent wish that we could take your place, as the majority of us still alive are already dead.

Perhaps if we could things would change - we have nothing to loose and everything to gain by an honorable death in combat.

During the last two centuries, the call to arms for the Marines was met with the same esprit that characterized our glorious victories on the battlefield.  "Devil dogs". We struck fear into the hearts of our enemies, and rightfully so.  Your leadership will now be put to the most severe and unforgiving test:  combat.  I am confident that you will emerge from this war as we have in others - the complete masters of the battlefield, an independent brotherhood impervious to politics and over zealous individuals in the federal government.

At the same time, I must remind you of our code of conduct.  Do not expose yourselves by carrying out illegal orders.
Again, we alone possess the moral fiber and the sheer power to stand up to violations on the battlefield.

May god be with you, good luck, watch your six.  If only I could be there with you.
