Cheney Chides Naysayers;  Bolton Warns Iran, North Korea, Syria

Wednesday, April 9, 2003

Operation Iraqi Freedom is "one of the most extraordinary military campaigns
ever conducted," Vice President Dick Cheney told the nattering nabobs of
negativism today.
"With every day, with every advance of our coalition forces, the wisdom of that
plan becomes more apparent," he said in New Orleans at the annual convention of
the American Society of Newspaper Editors.
As for White House wannabe Wesley Clark and other armchair generals, he
dismissed them as "retired military officers embedded in TV studios."
Warning to Iran, North Korea, Syria
The war has sent a clear message to all violent groups that the United States
has the capacity and the will to wage war on terrorism and win decisively, the
veep said.
Earlier today John Bolton, U.S. undersecretary of state for arms control and
international security, was more explicit.
"With respect to the issue of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction
in the post-conflict period, we are hopeful that a number of regimes will draw
the appropriate lesson from Iraq that the pursuit of weapons of mass destruction
is not in their national interest," he said at a news conference in Rome.
Bolton specifically mentioned Syria, North Korea and Iran.
According to Cheney, the United Nations and even such Saddam allies as France
will have humanitarian involvement in the postwar efforts in Iraq. But the key
role in the reconstruction of Iraq and the creation of a new Iraqi government
"has to reside with the U.S. government."
"We don't believe that the United Nations is equipped to play that central role.
It will play a very important role, but I think the central role will reside
with the coalition," Cheney said.
