Sharon: Palestinian 'right of return' off the table 05/07/03: (Jerusalem Post) Palestinians must renounce their demand that all refugees and their descendants have the right to return to their original homes in Israel, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Tuesday, setting a condition for peace negotiations. "The right of return is a recipe for the destruction of Israel," Sharon said. "We will not accept such a thing. We made that very clear." The roadmap calls for negotiations over tough issues, including refugees, in its final stage. However, Sharon indicated that Israel would demand a renunciation of the refugee demand before that. "This is something Israel insists on and sees it as a condition for continuing the process," he said. Though Israel has always opposed the "right of return" it had never posed its renunciation as a condition for peace talks. Speaking to Palestinian reporters this week, the new Palestinian prime minister, Mahmoud Abbas, said the Israeli demand "is one of their dreams we reject completely."
