Accusations rife in Caracas bombings CARACAS, Venezuela, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- A string of bomb attacks in the Venezuelan capital has led to mutual accusations by the government and the opposition -- even charges of CIA involvement. Many of the bombings occurred within supposedly well-guarded military installations. But with no group claiming responsibility and no arrests, the identity of the bombers -- who have caused no deaths or serious injuries -- remains a mystery, the Latin American Post reported Friday. The latest spate of attacks began Sept. 17 with an explosion in the barracks of the presidential guard across the street from the Miraflores palace. President Hugo Chavez was in the palace at the time. Saturday a grenade was allegedly thrown at Conatel, the national telecommunications commission. Sunday saw three blasts at military facilities in Caracas, two of them inside the main military barracks of Fort Tiuna. The third destroyed two fuel trucks at the La Carlota air base, home of the air force high command. Defense Minister Gen. Jose Luis Prieto said those behind the bombings sought to "generate alarm and cause fear among the civilian population."
