The world that we thought we once lived in is gone.

TO THE SENATORS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

06/01/05
"ICH" - - Do you feel the earth moving under your feet? Does it give you a disconcerting sense of unease? It should; because the world that we thought we once lived in is gone. Whether our recent past of relative domestic security from terrorism was an illusion, our vulnerability to it now is not. And it is with great derision, that this government is not helping but rather, escalating the consequences.

The policy that our government has adopted over the decades does not look kindly upon us now, nor will our current actions be deemed reputable in the future. The regimes we supported in the past are now our enemies. We’ve taken a direct and negative military action against a country that was neither a threat to us nor implicated in the Trade Towers, Pentagon and Pennsylvania hijacking terrorist attacks. The Senate is about to place into an international diplomatic position a man who has exhibited little diplomacy (to say the least!) which only confirms that we are acting like bullies to the world and will continue to do so. What difference does it make that John Bolton hasn’t broken any laws? Does that simple requirement make him an ideal candidate for such an important position? I haven’t broken any laws either; does that make me a candidate to the office?

With the gravity of the international animosity that exists against the United States, wouldn’t it be prudent to place someone in the United Nations Ambassador position that excels at diplomacy? John Bolton may have many excellent qualities, but that is definitely not one of them! What is more important to each and every one of you who are about to decide: attempting to peacefully negotiate our respect back, so that we may start a new path of peace, or continue this destructive personification of pushing our agenda at any cost?

I am disappointed that the Senate Foreign Relations Committee could not come to this conclusion. It is unfortunate that our congressional time must be wasted to put this to a vote. Whatever happened to supporting common sense in the decision making process? Weren’t these committees initially designed to enhance time management?

I would sincerely hope that, as a U.S. citizen, you would all begin to look at the predicament we face here. Please stop trying to protect your (and your lobbyist fundraiser friends) professional and personal ass-ets and seriously consider worrying about those of your MANY constituents who work hard to make a decent (but definitely not luxurious) living. Let us all be accountable and responsible for our actions, from the money we earn, the gifts we are given, the procurement of political funding, the reflection of our actions, to the integrity of our nation. PLEASE begin by demanding that our ‘leader’ choose someone who has these qualities; that can wield his/her influence with grace and discretion and negotiate with judicious tact.

Sincerely,
Lisa Wiederrich
